5 Days Mount Meru Climb (Via Arusha Np)
Day 1: Nairobi / Moshi
We can depart Nairobi this morning with the shuttle to Moshi,
across the Tanzanian border. You have a comfortable stay at your hotel in
the town for thenight.
Day 2: Moshi / Miriakamba Hut
After breakfast at your hotel, we can leave Moshi (or Arusha) to
drive to Arusha National Park. At the gate we will meet our armed Park
Ranger who will accompany us on our climb, which begins out in the
grasslands of the lower slopes. Here we will likely encounter giraffe,
buffalo and warthogs. Once the grasslands lead into lush forest, we can
spot bush bucks, Red Duikers and many varieties of birds and monkeys,
including the Skye's and Colubus species until we arrive up to the
Miriakamba Huts at 2515m. We can spend the night here, after our 3- 4
hour beautiful nature walk today.
Day 3: Miriakamba / Saddle Hut
This morning we can head to our camp for the night which is at
3560m and is about a 3- 4 hour hike away. Along the way, we can stop at
the Elephant Ridge Viewpoint for a picnic lunch before arriving at Saddle
Huts to set up camp. This afternoon, we can trek to the summit of Little
Meru Peak at 3810m, which promises magnificent views of sheer cliffs,
crater walls and Mt. Meru's summit. Beneath a setting sun, we will catch
the magically changing colour hues on Mt. Kilimanjaro's glaciers behind
us-- truly sensational!
Day 4: Saddle Hut / Summit (4530m) Miriakamba hut
We have a very early morning rise at 2am today, if we wish to catch
the spectacular sight of the rising sun behind Mt. Kilimanjaro. Along the
way, we will pass the Rhino point at 2870m before the narrow ridge of the
crater summit. This will take us 4- 5 hours and as long as it's a clear
morning, we will see the active volcano of Mt. Oldoinyo Lengai to the
West, and below us the grasslands of the Maasai Steppe and the town of
Arusha. After soaking in the many soaring views from Mt. Meru summit, we
can begin our 2- 3 hour descent to Saddle Huts where we can stop for
lunch, before continuing down for a further 2- 3 hours to arrive at
Miriamkamba Huts for dinner and to spend the night.
Day 5: Miriakamba hut / Moshi
