History

I was born on the slopes of Mt.Kenya in the mid 70s in a village 2 kilometers from Nanyuki town, which is on the leeward side of the mountain i.e. 7 kilometers away. I grew with great interest and admiration of what the mountain offers beyond waking up and watching the clear blue sky. At a young age of 10 years, I could only accompany my elder siblings up to half a kilometer journey to the mountain. This venture entailed fetching firewood, hunting birds, collecting flowers or fishing in the fresh mountain rivers.

I had a big dream of one day climbing to the highest point where I heard there was presence of snow, which I only saw from afar. I anticipated as a young boy to accompany non-African visitors whom I was fond of greeting along the way. I liked the idea of them asking me the name of birds they would sometimes see me holding. Unfortunately, those who had gone far up the mountain told me it was very cold and a boy like me would never make it back alive. It only made me more curious and my anticipation to grow older became obvious.

At 15 years my elder brother who is also a trekking guide put me to a test for my interest and reselience. He provided me with all climbing gears and gave me a 8 kg luggage which was relatively light in weight and told me a guide becomes a porter first . Then with his group, we took off. My pace was slow and undesirable. However, watching elephants, Zebras Monkeys and antelopes was a motivator. There were hundred variety of flowers which in all my life, had I ever seen such a scene with so many colours in one place.

Birds singing were like orchestra in my ears but somehow frightening at night with leopards groaning. At three kilometers on the third day, I could not go further and I used the remaining strength to go back with one porter to accompany me. I did this for the next six trips. I was not given a porter at third time to take me back since I had mastered the routes and was not afraid. When schools closed, I often joined my brother in his treks, particularly I liked august, and December holidays when climbers arrived in large numbers.

I never forget the day we reached Lenana Point which is the peak. The first thing I did was to scoop the cold snow. The sight was marvelous and I knew without doubt I could be a mountain guide. Later I finished my A levels and the experience I had was useful for my training besides having lots of information. I became a junior guide in 1998 after my graduation with National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) and Mountain Club of Kenya. Later I connected with several touring networks.

Today I am a registered senior guide and assist hikers climb up to all East Africa Mountains including Mt.Kilimanjaro, Aberdares, and Elgon among others.

Let me be your guide to climbing mountains in East Africa!

oldonyo lengai

The record of eruptions on the mountain dates to 1883, and flows were also recorded between 1904 and 1910 and again between 1913 and 1915. A major eruption took place in June 1917, which resulted in volcanic ash being deposited about 48 kilometres away.
